SSE welcomes EU's ambitious 2040 climate proposal

February 7, 2024

Today (Feb 6) the European Commission put forward an ambitious 2040 climate proposal for the EU, proposing to target at least a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 on 1990 levels.

The proposal will be considered by EU Member States and the European Parliament before being formally adopted and will form the basis of the EU's update to its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) at COP30 in 2025.

Responding to the EU's proposed 2040 climate target today, Alistair Phillips-Davies, CEO of SSE said:

"We welcome the European Commission's proposal for an ambitious EU climate target to cut carbon emissions by at least 90% by 2040.

"Clean, homegrown energy will not only strengthen energy security for homes and businesses across the EU but also help mitigate the worst impacts of climate change.

"The focus now should be on the speedy delivery of this ambition, particularly unlocking the potential of offshore wind in the North Seas, which will be enabled by coordinated infrastructure planning and supportive market arrangements.

"As one of the world's leading electricity infrastructure companies, SSE stands ready to play our part in accelerating the clean energy transition."

SSE is a leading developer and operator of renewable energy in the UK and Ireland and is currently building the world's largest offshore wind farm at Dogger Bank in the North Sea. The Group is also developing a portfolio of onshore renewable energy projects across the EU including Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Poland.

The UK will be considering its 2040 climate goal at the same time through the implementation of the 7th Carbon Budget for 2038-42 under the UK's Climate Change Act, with the UK's Climate Change Committee (CCC) advice due at the start of 2025.
