Uniper

Along with an impressive array of fellow judges, I've been spending time looking at the entries for the global awards for Tank Storage magazine.

Having a long-standing relationship with the magazine dating back to the 2022 World Hydrogen Congress is an enjoyable one, indeed we recorded an informal interview together. Since then, of course, things have moved on and I'm impressed at the variety of innovations and projects and criteria and for them around ninety of them under a range of varied categories.

Analysing them over the last couple of days I found that the activity ties in rather well with wider work informing global stakeholders on the realities of the building out the nascent hydrogen economy.

I'm in the process of preparing a bespoke standalone course on hydrogen storage. 100% hydrogen storage in cavern storage facilities has reached industrial maturity.

Cavern storage systems can compensate for short-, mid- and long-term fluctuations in production and demand, and efficient due to their rapid injection and withdrawal capabilities with required security of supply. Porous rock storage facilities, found in southern Germany, offer this potential.

Obviously, there are differences within that panoply ranging from seasonal storage as depicted in the Uniper image in the mast headline * a former company of mine) and down to the smaller scale storage to cylinders to larger tanks at refineries and facilities near ports and including the reutilising of salt caverns and expended oil and gas reservoirs.

Prize-winners will be announced on 12th March at the glittering 2024 Awards Ceremony & Gala Dinner at Schiecentrale, Rotterdam next month. Best of luck to those who progressed to the shortlist and on to the finals.

As for the course itself, I look forward to sharing details of timings with you in the coming days and weeks; stay tuned.

Feel free in the interim to join with me and the community of experts ;  Hydrogen Storage
