U.S. battery manufacturing positioned to grow 10-fold by 2027

China is home to 6 of the top 10 battery manufacturers in the world today. Still, as of 2022, there are 8 new facilities in the Midwestern and Southern United States, with many more in development. This is according to BloombergNEF's recent global lithium-ion battery supply chain ranking. The demand for battery parts and metals is currently dominated by China, but driven by increasing demand for electric vehicles and energy storage, the U.S. is rapidly positioning to grow. The U.S. is looking to reverse that trend with an injection from the IRA, but will it be too little too late?

As long as variable resources in power generation are the leading focus of development it is probably not too late. Add to that, the desired growth in electric transportation.  What concerns pretty much everyone, is how the country secures the parts and minerals needed to build batteries.  If we want supply chain independence we need to allow and develop our mining resources.  It will be interesting to see how all of that evolves.
