NTPC took blue sky initiative of biomass co-firing in coal fired power plant in year 2017 to solve the issue of stubble burning by farmers while mitigating CO2 emission from coal fired power plant by partial substitution of coal with carbon neutral biomass pellets. This will create a large-scale market for agricultural residue in power sector to enable farmers to start selling it rather than burning. In May 2021, Govt. of India launched National Biomass Mission for expansion of biomass co-firing across country. Nevertheless, still many myths are associated with biomass co-firing which kept on hovering in the minds of masses which remains an inhibiting factor so far. This paper aims at bringing clarity among different stakeholders and instills a sense of confidence among them for nationwide promotion and adoption of biomass cofiring.

Are there any particular countries that India has or should look to as examples of the right way to do this?

Though we have achieved 10% co-firing expertise. To increase biomass co-firing ratio, we are looking Drax UK as an example.

I was not able to again access your pdf publication after scanning it a first time. Still, I recall your work from some other source and used it as a good example of good biomass science.

Managing biomass from agriculture, etc. should be a bigger topic for environment and energy than it is now. Recently, in Minnesota U.S.A. we have had air quality alerts from many wildfires in Canada, and it is only mid May. Also, the sun is dimmed by high altitude smoke. And I presume when the wind blows from the south the smoke effects the north polar snow and ice. Our farmers need good sunshine, and polar snow needs to remain clean.

You have engineered a good solution for your community, with good follow-up data and outreach. I'm not aware of many (or any) that have accomplished what you have in this important area of environment, climate, and energy.
