Over the past five years, Europe's base of conventional hydropower and pumped hydro capacity grew at about 1 percent a year, reaching 251 gigawatts in 2019, according to the International Hydropower Association (IHA). In the meantime, green hydrogen and batteries pose a rising threat to hydropower plants and their future profits.

Axpo plans to produce green hydrogen by building a production facility at its 43.4-MW MW Eglisau-Glattfelden hydropower plant on the Rhine River in Switzerland, the first of several hydrogen facilities Axpo will commission in the coming years. If demand for hydrogen grows as expected, plant capacity can be doubled to 5 MW.

The world’s hydropower developers want a seat at the green recovery funding table alongside other key decarbonization technologies such as wind, solar, batteries and green hydrogen. That’s equivalent to a 65 percent increase on current global hydropower capacity, according to the IHA’s 2020 Hydropower Status Report.
