The annual Green California Schools and Community Colleges Summit, which comes to the Pasadena Convention Center November 28-29, is designed to provide resources to support sustainability programs in California schools. Education and training sessions, keynote presentations and an awards program all contribute to this goal, but for many attendees the Expo is the key attraction.
This is a time of greatly increased activity in California’s school facilities sector. Reflecting this demand, the Expo for the 2017 conference is being populated by an unusually diverse and innovative group of companies. Here are a few examples:
Ventacity offers ultra-efficient heat-recovery ventilator (HRV) systems, drawing on established Passive House techniques. “Everywhere you look, at retail and office buildings, you see a rooftop unit (RTU) for ventilation, heating, and cooling. Millions of them,” said Ventacity founder Sal D’Auria. “Without heat recovery technology, these units are wasting an enormous amount of energy. Separating important ventilation from heating and cooling systems makes so much sense from a thermodynamic perspective. We have brought to market the missing component that can completely transform the HVAC energy footprint of the commercial and multifamily building sector.”
Wahaso provides design-build commercial and institutional greywater and rainwater harvesting systems. “Commercial buildings can save millions of gallons of potable water each year by harvesting rainwater, grey water, condensate and other on-site sources for non-potable uses like toilet flushing, irrigation and cooling tower make-up,” the company says. “We believe that some form of water harvesting and reuse can be both economically and environmentally viable for all commercial buildings.”
Pelican Wireless manufactures internet-enabled tools for building climate control. “With Pelican’s powerful Web enabled solution and innovative wireless mesh network, you add a scalable solution for managing climate control in individual schools, campuses, and districts,” the company states. “Pelican’s philosophy is a simple climate control solution, easy for on-site engineers to use to maintain building climates across school districts.”
As districts undertake facility projects, it’s important for them to be aware of all the current options that are available to help them create the healthiest, most efficient facilities possible. The Expo offers a unique, concentrated opportunity for hands-on exposure to scores of resources.
