The project will help flush away fossil fuels when manufacturing toilet paper and tissues.

As the UK’s economy decarbonises, HYRO is helping industrial businesses explore green hydrogen to replace polluting fossil fuels in industrial processes that are hard to electrify.

You can find more information about this specific HYRO project with Kimberly-Clark below:

  • They will build an electrolyser on-site at Kimberly-Clark’s manufacturing facility in Northfleet, Kent.
  • The electrolyser will use electricity from renewable sources to split water and create hydrogen which will replace natural gas in the production process of toilet paper and tissues.
  • It will have a capacity of 10.6 MW, avoiding thousands of tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.
  • The project is already in the planning process.

Alex Brierley, co-head of Octopus Energy Generation’s fund management team said: “This is a major milestone as this funding will enable HYRO to roll out green hydrogen projects at scale in hard-to-electrify industrial processes. Our first project will be working with Kimberly-Clark to flush away fossil fuels when manufacturing Andrex and Kleenex. We’ve got a big pipeline of projects to help even more industrial businesses decarbonise – and we’re on track to invest billions in this sector.”

Marco Perona, EMEA CEO for RES, said: “Green hydrogen, created using low cost, British renewable energy, will revolutionise how we power industry, helping the UK to build a globally competitive, zero carbon economy in the process. HYRO, in partnership with Kimberly-Clark, is leading this transition with a large pipeline of projects and with this latest backing will show how we can make green hydrogen a reality.”
