The European Commission has endorsed EDP’s transformative project to repurpose the Aboño coal-fired power plant into a renewable hydrogen production hub, signaling a pivotal shift towards green energy in Europe. This support comes with a substantial €18.07 million funding from the Innovation Fund, adding to previous investments, aimed at propelling decarbonization in Asturias, Spain.

Dubbed Asturias H2 Valley, the initiative seeks to retrofit the coal plant’s infrastructure for green hydrogen production, leveraging renewable sources and cutting-edge electrolysis technology to slash greenhouse gas emissions and stimulate sustainable regional development.

With plans to install 150 MW of electrolysis capacity, the project anticipates generating around 19,446 tons of renewable hydrogen annually. This supply will not only fuel EDP’s own operations but also meet the demands of major industrial players such as DuPont and Cementos Tudela Veguín, marking a significant step in industrial decarbonization efforts.

Asturias H2 Valley’s recognition as a Project of Common Interest (PCI) by the EU highlights its strategic significance in bolstering the continent’s energy transition. This status ensures streamlined regulatory procedures, enhanced financing avenues, and underscores the initiative’s contribution to the EU’s decarbonization objectives. The European Commission’s confirmation of the Innovation Fund’s aid reaffirms its dedication to fostering a sustainable energy future across the bloc.
