Initiating a greener energy phase, the Basque Country has started producing green hydrogen, powered by a 2.5 MW electrolyzer stationed at Petronor. This setup feeds the Energy Intelligence Center and the company’s newly established offices situated in the Ezkerraldea-Meatzaldea Technology Park, Abanto Zierbena (Bizkaia).

Furthermore, the green hydrogen produced will fuel the initial buses and heavy-duty vehicles within the park’s mobility logistics system. Notably, these vehicles will have access to the Basque Country’s premier hydroline station (hydrogen refueling station). Both EVE and Repsol have championed this endeavor.

This marks the inaugural green hydrogen production utilizing European technology, with Petronor playing a pivotal role in forging a robust value chain. Embracing this cross-border technology collaboration will pave the way for the expansion of Europe’s green hydrogen sector, along with the vital infrastructure for its integration as a decarbonizing energy source.

SENER and John Cockerill have crafted the inaugurated electrolyser, necessitating an €11 million investment for the infrastructure to produce and distribute green hydrogen. Moreover, Nortegas spearheaded the development of the requisite hydroducts linking the Petronor refinery and the Energy Intelligence Center.

The successful launch and operation of this electrolyser have served to authenticate all the requisite technology and regulations essential for renewable hydrogen generation, thus setting the stage for subsequent projects that Petronor aims to initiate.

These endeavors by Petronor are integral to the vision of the Basque Hydrogen Corridor association, BH2C, which aspires to catalyze a shift in the energy and economic paradigms. This transition is aimed at promoting decarbonization across pivotal sectors, encompassing energy, mobility, industry, and services.

Employing a 2.5 MW electrolyser, the Basque Country’s renewable hydrogen initiative extracts hydrogen from water and electricity. This electrolyser harnesses renewable power from the regional electric grid of the Basque Country.

The electrolyser-produced hydrogen is stored and then channeled to the Energy Intelligence Center, the company’s fresh premises, and the park’s mobility logistics system through a hydroduct.
