Substantial Investments in Renewable Energy

The Austrian federal government is dedicating a considerable portion of its budget to renewable energy, including heat transition, renewable expansion, and energy-saving initiatives. “Secure, affordable and sustainable energy is crucial for our households and the competitiveness of our location,” stated Brunner, highlighting the government’s commitment to investing billions in the sector over the coming years. From 2027, the annual investment in hydrogen will rise to €100 million, marking a significant increase in support for renewable hydrogen production and use.

Hydrogen as a Catalyst for Climate Goals

Green hydrogen is positioned as a pivotal technology in Austria’s climate strategy, essential for decarbonizing industrial processes and achieving sustainability targets. “Green hydrogen plays a crucial role in achieving climate goals and the sustainable decarbonization of numerous industrial applications and processes,” emphasized Strugl. VERBUND, Austria’s leading energy company, is at the forefront of this transition, planning substantial projects like the “Green Ammonia Linz” to bolster local hydrogen production and establish diverse import channels for green hydrogen.

Enhancing Geothermal Energy Utilization

In addition to hydrogen, Austria is setting its sights on deep geothermal energy, recognizing its potential to contribute significantly to the country’s renewable energy mix. The government plans to revise legislation to maximize the exploitation of geothermal resources and has announced a funding competition aimed at municipalities exploring the integration of geothermal energy into their local energy systems.
