This marks the first-of-its-kind deployment of a hydrogen-powered generator connected to EV chargers at a UK service station to accelerate the rollout of EV charging infrastructure.
Cairn Lodge Services, a family-run motorway services business renowned for its commitment to quality service and sustainability, has taken a proactive step to bridge the energy grid gap by using hydrogen power.
Westmorland have partnered with GeoPura to connect its HPU, fuelled by green hydrogen, to Westmorland EV Chargers, provided by SWARCO Smart Charging. The GeoPura HPU supplements the current grid supply and provide suitable electricity for EV charging at the service station.

From 12th of December EV drivers visiting Cairn Lodge Services will have access to 6 ultra-rapid Westmorland EV chargers from SWARCO Smart Charging powered by green hydrogen until a suitable electrical grid connection is established.
This innovative solution offers seamless scalability for off-grid EV charging in various applications, even in areas where grid upgrades are delayed or not feasible.
By incorporating the GeoPura HPUs Cairn Lodge Services is overcoming electrical grid capacity restraints and avoiding delays to the opening of its EV charging facilities. It will now be able to meet the demands of the holiday season and the expected surge in EV charging requests throughout the Christmas period.

The GeoPura HPU harnesses the power of hydrogen to generate electricity, offering a clean and efficient alternative to traditional diesel generators to provide off-grid and supplementary power for EV charging. The Challenge of Electrical Grid Capacity for EV Charging:
The rapid growth of the electric vehicle (EV) market has highlighted the urgent need for widespread EV charging facilities. As more people switch to EVs, the pressure on the electrical grid will only increase. Local authorities are confronted with the challenge of ensuring sufficient grid capacity to support the growing demand for charging infrastructure.
An independent report from RECHARGE UK estimates that by 2050, charging demand will nearly triple for public charging from 10.9TWh to 29.8TWh. Published on 20 July, the report warns that to-date the charge point rollout has been uneven, with gaps in rural areas. Major grid capacity increases are required, especially in the Southeast, East and North West of England. The report recommends local authorities urgently develop EV infrastructure plans to co-ordinate grid upgrades and suggests that solutions like pop-up charging hubs can plug gaps.
