First Solar withdrew most of its 2020 guidance on Thursday despite saying it has not yet felt any major business impact from the global coronavirus pandemic, highlighting the uncertainty facing the global solar market. First Solar executives said that plans to potentially sell the company’s solar-project development business could be delayed as a result of the difficulty of deal-making in the current climate.

Distributed solar and storage company SunPower ended the first coronavirus-influenced quarter with a loss, but some optimism for a rebound as it reported Q1 earnings on Thursday. After a rough April, SunPower said demand appears to be slowly growing back to pre-coronavirus levels. With shutdown orders lifting in some countries across the globe, the company’s solar manufacturing arm is also expecting a slow revival.

A concise three-sentence letter sent by the U.S. Treasury Department on Thursday suggests relief is on the way for a renewables industry concerned about meeting quickly approaching tax credit deadlines. The letter came in response to a late April appeal from a bipartisan group of senators, who asked that the Department extend deadlines for solar and wind developers looking to qualify projects for the investment tax credit and production tax credit.

Shell Nederland and Dutch energy company Eneco have confirmed they entered last week’s Dutch offshore wind tender as part of a joint effort to create a record-breaking hydrogen cluster in the Netherlands. Researchers at the DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) recently demonstrated a 20-kilowatt bi-directional wireless charging system installed on a UPS medium-duty, plug-in hybrid electric delivery truck. Conversion of one of the UK's last operating coal power plants comes as Great Britain's longest-ever period of coal-free power pushes one month. Kilroot power station in Northern Ireland, one of the UK's last operating coal plants, is set to be converted to run on gas.
