European utility giant EDF has acquired the British energy storage and EV infrastructure developer Pivot Power, following the French state-owned energy firm's declaration last year that it would invest $10 billlion in energy storage by 2035. The deal gives EDF access to a 2-gigawatt pipeline of projects and to Pivot’s inventive route to market, in the absence of readily available contracted revenue for battery assets.

Midwestern utility Alliant Energy plans to build up to 1 gigawatt of solar in its Wisconsin service territory by 2023, according to a plan it released last week. While light on details, the solar plan will help Alliant reach goals it laid out last year to cut carbon emissions 80 percent and ramp up the renewable portion of its energy mix to 30 percent by 2030.

Shell and Sumitomo have taken a minority stake in African minigrid firm PowerGen. The pair will have a combined ownership of 15 percent after leading the most recent funding round alongside six other investors. Shell will get a seat on the board, with Sumitomo taking an observer seat. Financial details of the Series B round were not revealed. PowerGen has connected around 15,000 homes and business via its minigrid installations in Kenya, Tanzania, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

The e-mobility business of power management company Eaton has launched a four-speed transmission for heavy-duty commercial EVs. Designed for Class 7 and 8 vehicles, the new transmission features fine-pitch helical gears and low-noise operation. Eaton said its new gearbox does not have a clutch and is synchronized via the traction motor. The transmission is scheduled for a 2022 debut.
