Xpeng Motors (Xpeng) kicked off the delivery of its Xpeng G3 2020 Edition EV at the Chengdu Motor Show this weekend and thus hit another milestone. Less than 2 months after launching the new, enhanced, high-performance version of its G3 SUV series, the company beat most delivery estimates while continuing its steady rollout strategy.

At the hosting ceremony, Henry Xia, Co-founder and Vice President of Xpeng Motors, said: “The delivery of the G3 2020 marks another milestone for the best-selling G3 series. We are very glad to showcase the latest model in the series at the Chengdu Motor Show.

“Building on the success of the G3 2019 – already welcomed for its smart features tailored for China’s road conditions and driving habits – the new G3 2020 Edition addresses customer demand for longer driving range and other enhancements. We are excited to start delivery of the G3 2020 in Chengdu, the gateway to Southwest China, where we recently opened five experience and service centers. We are confident it will set new benchmarks for customer satisfaction.”

Xpeng G3, China’s EV Hit Wonder?

Already China’s most popular EV from a startup (by sales and vehicles insured from a new maker for January–July 2019), according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the G3 2020 model is improving its performance further. The range has been extended to 520 km NEDC, and the new-generation lithium-ion batteries from CATL pack an energy density of 180 Wh/kg, itself a record for China’s new EV brands.

As far as safety, the G3 has a battery pack rated IP68 (waterproof & dustproof), which the company says is the highest rating globally. Its ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) system has accumulated 2,627,589 km of independent driving, AI voice assistant has been accessed an average of 14,666 times per day, 40 new features have been added, and over 200 functions have been optimized since the car’s launch.

The Xpeng G3 2020 Edition sports the newly upgraded XPILOT 2.5. I was able to use it in Shanghai and felt Xpeng’s in-house auto OS met the Chinese road conditions remarkably well. New features include TJA (Traffic Congestion Assist) and ICA (Intelligent Cruise Assist), enabling LCC (Lane Centering Control) for both urban driving and highway conditions.

Xpeng’s G3 2020 Hits Its Target

Overall, Xpeng continues to improve its electric G3 and pushes each new version further via over-the-air (OTA) updates. The company continues to meet its milestones while delivering products and features on time. It’s refreshing to see this new wave of startups hitting their milestones with little fanfare and steady financial backing. We look forward to more companies simply doing the work and leaving the brouhaha to the bigger players.
