Mike and Zach continue their conversation by diving into Joe Biden’s choice for Vice President. At the time this podcast was recorded, the Vice President had not yet been chosen. The co-hosts talk more about what it might mean for Biden to pick Kamala Harris as his running mate and how COVID-19 has already impacted the process and might impact the 2020 election. (Listen to the episode to find out which of the two was pulling for Harris.)

Zach and Mike then launch into a broader conversation about how both the Republican Party and Democratic Party have changed over time. Mike explains that picking the Vice President is a balancing act done out of safety and to energize a piece of the voter base that the primary elections do not energize. The co-hosts explore how the policies of presidential candidates would have been considered over time. Mike touches on how the Republican Party has evolved to adopt groups that contain racism and misogyny, for example. But Mike also sees that the Republican Party may be starting to shift in relation to these party identities and begin tackling problems like climate change that many in the party have denied historically. Mike sees the Republican Party taking one of two routes: leaning more into the extremism seen with the Trump administration, or beginning to re-evaluate what the party stands for.

Mike and Zach transition into talking about how COVID-19 is shaping the economy and causing severe suffering within the United States. The co-hosts talk about what the future looks like and what the general public might expect to see happening in the next few years. They also ask the question: how will the COVID-19 pandemic influence politics? Mike sees the mishandling of the pandemic as fuel for energizing the Democratic base for the November election. They wrap up the show by talking about where they see hope in the near future for the United States.
