Doosan Launches Hydrogen Fuel Cell Solutions for Buildings
  • Development of ‘H2-PEMFC’ system that directly injects hydrogen as fuel
  • Successful ‘demonstration of operation of hydrogen fuel cell linked to hydrogen extracted from ammonia’ with Korea Energy Research Institute
  • Acceleration of development of hydrogen fuel cell for mobility such as construction machinery and ships

Doosan Corporation is accelerating the diversification of its hydrogen fuel cell product lineup.

Doosan Corporation completed the development of the ‘H2-PEMFC (polymer electrolyte fuel cell)’ system, a 1kW/10kW class hydrogen fuel cell for buildings and houses that can be operated by directly injecting hydrogen fuel, and complied with the fixed fuel cell safety standard ‘KGS AH371’. It was announced on the 30th that it had obtained design and production stage certification.

The ‘H2-PEMFC’ system developed this time is a pure hydrogen model that directly injects hydrogen fuel rather than reforming natural gas, and is not only capable of producing high electrical efficiency of 50-55%, but also can be used as a hydrogen fuel cell of other types. As it operates at lower temperatures, load-following operation that adjusts power generation in response to changes in load is faster. The 1kW/10kW class ‘H2-PEMFC’ system will be applied to Samcheok City’s Hydrogen Town, one of the first hydrogen pilot cities, and demonstrated by 2024, and a 100kW class ‘H2-PEMFC’ system for small-scale distributed power generation is also planned to be developed by 2026. .

Doosan Corporation recently succeeded in ‘demonstrating the operation of a hydrogen fuel cell linked to ammonia-extracted hydrogen’ with the Korea Institute of Energy Research (hereinafter referred to as EGRI) using the ‘H2-PEMFC’ system. This demonstration was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Unho Jeong’s research team at the Hydrogen Research Center of EGIN, which succeeded in securing the core technology for the reactor that produces high-purity hydrogen from ammonia for the first time in Korea. As a result of the demonstration, when hydrogen extracted from ammonia was used as fuel, it was at a level equivalent to that of general high-purity hydrogen. It was confirmed that electricity production was possible.

Ammonia is a carbon-free fuel made up of only hydrogen and nitrogen, and can be easily liquefied at room temperature at high pressure, making it more advantageous for storage and transportation than liquefied hydrogen. Liquefied ammonia has a hydrogen storage density per unit volume that is about 1.7 times higher than that of liquefied hydrogen, so it can be stored in large quantities and is attracting attention as an important resource in the coming hydrogen era.

In addition, Doosan Corporation is accelerating the development of hydrogen fuel cells for mobility. Doosan Corporation has been developing a ’60kW hydrogen fuel cell power pack for construction machinery’ to be applied to Doosan Bobcat’s skid steer loader, which has the largest global market share, since last year, and plans to complete development and verification by 2026. After that, we will also pursue the development of hydrogen fuel cells for ships of 100kW to 200kW.

In particular, shipping is the field where decarbonization regulations are being most specifically implemented, and the IMO (International Maritime Organization) recently raised the carbon reduction target in the shipping sector from 50% to 100% by 2050, and hydrogen can respond to this. It is attracting attention as one of the important alternatives available. Doosan Corporation expects that the demand for marine ‘H2-PEMFC’, which has high electrical efficiency and excellent load-following operation, will increase, especially for small and medium-sized ships.

An official from Doosan Corporation said, “The development and demonstration of mass production, storage, and transportation technology for carbon-free hydrogen energy is in full swing around the world, and it is expected that a market using pure hydrogen as a fuel will open within a few years.” “In addition to hydrogen fuel cells for buildings and new and renewable energy supply convergence support projects, we will grow into an eco-friendly energy solution company by expanding our business areas to distributed power generation and mobility,” he said.

Since its launch in 2003, Fuel Cell Power BU, which is in charge of Doosan Corporation’s fuel cell business for building owners and housing, has secured all-round technologies, from the design and production of stacks and reformers, which are core fuel cell technologies, to in-house production of system integration. Doosan Co., Ltd., which has mainly produced the PEMFC lineup, including 1kW, 5kW, and 10kW hydrogen fuel cells for buildings/houses and 1kW~100kW hydrogen systems, will introduce a 10kW SOFC (solid solid) for building owners and homes with the world’s highest power generation efficiency in 2021. Oxide fuel cell) development has been completed.
