Bad Lauchstädt— Nine months after the initial groundbreaking ceremony, Bad Lauchstädt Energy Park is delighted to announce the topping-out ceremony of the electrolysis building, marking a significant milestone in the development of this key energy project. This building will house the 30 MW large-scale electrolyser, the heart of the Energy Park, manufactured by Dresden-based Sunfire. The project is a beacon for the energy transition in Central Germany, aiming to demonstrate the industrial-scale production, storage, transportation, marketing, and utilization of green hydrogen.

In recent months, construction has swiftly progressed, with the completion of the energy centre’s shell and an additional building for ancillary facilities. At this juncture, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the builders from Franz Kassecker GmbH for their excellent work and dedication to the project.

The Sunfire electrolyser, pivotal to the Energy Park, is scheduled for delivery and installation before the end of 2024. This innovative project represents a significant step forward in the #Energiewende’s real-world laboratory, setting a precedent for green hydrogen’s role in a sustainable energy future.

“The Bad Lauchstädt Energy Park is a central building block for the development of a competitive green hydrogen economy in Mitteldeutschland. With this lighthouse project, Saxony-Anhalt is promoted to the Champions League. On the one hand, we benefit from the good hydrogen expertise and infrastructure in the country and, on the other hand, from the high level of expansion of renewable energies. The project is groundbreaking for the link between climate protection and economic development,” said Thomas Wünsch, State Secretary in the Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Energie, Klimaschutz und Umwelt des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt, congratulating the consortium.

“It is great to see that the piece of flat ground on which we broke ground as a consortium together with the Prime Ministers of Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony only 9 months ago now clearly shows the operation of the electrolyser. From here I can already see the first of the 8 wind turbines in motion. This means that the first part of our value chain in the project, the #Wasserstofferzeugung of green wind power, is now becoming more and more tangible,” says Cornelia Müller-Pagel, project manager of the EBL.

What are the next steps?

Until the Elektrolyser is installed, further structural work will take place, cable ducts will be pulled, and earthworks will be completed. Delivery of Sunfire’s electrolysis components is scheduled for as early as the second half of the year. Four 12-tonne blocks are assembled into a stack on site. A total of six of these stacks will then be embedded and installed in specified positions in the electrolysis building by Q1 2025.

Until the start of trial operation and regular operation from the end of 2025, air coolers, a rectifier for converting AC to DC voltage and gas processing are still being built on the site. In addition, the connection to the hydrogen pipeline, which is already in the process of being converted, will be made to the first customer, TotalEnergies Refinery Central Germany.
