A UK company based in Bletchley has developed and tested a high-power chemical rocket engine partly fuelled by plastic waste. Developed by Pulsar Fusion, the rocket is powered by high density polyethylene (HDPE) – from recycled plastic – and nitrous oxide. The two fuels seemingly burn together to produce a non-toxic plume, says the firm, a relatively rarity in itself.

The United States Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC) has announced a $2-million lithium-ion recycling development program with American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) in Fernley, Nevada. The contract award, which includes a 75-percent cost share by the ABTC-led project team, funds a 30-month project. The program’s goal is to demonstrate a scaled, fully-domestic, integrated processing cycle for the universal recycling of batteries with partners in the battery supply chain.

Follow @EngelsAngle. GE Renewable Energy announced a plan Tuesday to produce zero waste wind turbine blades by 2030. The plan will be carried out by LM Wind Power, a GE Renewable Energy subsidiary, which will aim to deliver no excess manufacturing materials and packaging to landfills and incineration without energy recovery. “Now the focus has evolved from making wind power not only competitive, but also making the industry sustainable," LM Wind Power CEO Olivier Fontan said in a statement.

The plastics recycling member-based charity RECOUP has published its 2021 UK Household Plastics Collection Survey , which analyses the collection of plastics for recycling from Local Authorities. The 2021 Survey estimated that 584,000 tonnes of household plastic packaging was collected for recycling in 2020. This was an increase of 24,000 tonnes or 4% in collection quantities compared to 2019, which is a positive performance despite the challenges created by COVID-19 and the UK leaving the EU.
