Electricity Sector Pitch Day Highlights Innovations in Generation, Transmission, Distribution, Demand, + Utilization

Decarbonizing the electricity sector is critical to climate action—not only because it’s responsible for 25 percent of the United States’ greenhouse-gas emissions, but because decarbonizing the other key greenhouse-gas-emitting sectors (transportation, manufacturing, buildings, and agriculture) must rely heavily on renewable-powered electrification.

Fortunately, many groundbreaking startups are developing technologies for a decarbonized, resilient grid. More Greentown members are innovating in this sector than in any other. This fall, we brought together those startups, Greentown partners, and the investor community for the latest installment of our Sector Pitch Day series to dive into innovation areas and opportunities present in the electricity sector.

Three major focus areas within electricity for collaborative innovation and implementation are generation; transmission and distribution; and demand and utilization. We’re proud to support climatetech startups that are developing solutions in each; learn about all our members innovating in electricity here and learn about those that pitched at the event below!

  • CalWave develops proprietary wave energy converter technology that survives extreme conditions.
  • CLS Wind’s self-erecting system allows for multiple turbine installations without the need for cranes.
  • Sol Clarity reduces water use by using an electrodynamic screen to repel dust from solar panels.
  • Emrod’s wireless system allows large amounts of energy to be sent safely across long distances without wires.
  • Ennuity Holdings is creating a brand new asset class that allows individuals to buy out their electric utility bill.
  • Revterra offers a kinetic energy storage solution for utility-scale renewable energy applications.
  • COI Energy’s subscription-based model enables users to buy, sell, trade, and gift energy.
  • OhmConnect enables customers to use clean energy without buying expensive solar-powered systems.
  • iGEN Technologies, a Canadian company introduced to Greentown Labs through the Consulate General of Canada in Boston, offers high-efficiency, low-carbon, resilient heating solutions that are immune to grid power outages.

More Greentown members are innovating in electricity than in any other sector.

The Electricity Sector Pitch Day keynote speakers were two members of the Resilient Energy Infrastructure Consortium, a group of nearly 20 Greentown startups working to collaborate with communities, municipalities, utilities, governments, and others to deploy their technologies. COI Energy Founder and CEO SaLisa Berrien and Packetized Energy Co-founder and CEO Paul Hines spoke of the importance of making the grid more resilient to the effects of climate change—especially in marginalized communities where climate change has the greatest impact—and capable of integrating various forms of renewable energy.

“What the Greentown community recognizes is that to solve these big issues before us, we have to come together,” Berrien said.
