Exploring underwater methane sources with mass spectrometry

Envirotec Magazine

In December 2022 the research vessel Polarstern explored methane sources in the South Atlantic using an underwater mass spectrometer. Enormous amounts of methane are trapped in the ocean floor worldwide. Methane is a harmful greenhouse gas. The higher the data density, the more accurate the mapping of methane sources.

Travel emissions drop added to lockdown methane surge, says new research

Envirotec Magazine

Reduced transport emissions led to lower levels of hydroxyl radicals – which could be said to act like a detergent to remove methane from the atmosphere, researchers say. Until now, the causes of the 2020 surge in methane – second only to carbon dioxide as a driver of climate change – had been unclear. ppb in 2019.

Wastewater sector emits nearly twice as much methane as previously thought

Envirotec Magazine

Municipal wastewater treatment plants emit nearly double the amount of methane into the atmosphere than scientists previously believed, according to new research from Princeton University. If the results from those 63 plants are representative, actual methane emissions from wastewater treatment facilities across the U.S.
