Clean hydrogen production exploration to begin in Oregon

Clean hydrogen production exploration to begin in Oregon

NW Natural and Hycamite have teamed up for the operation.

NW Natural, the largest gas utility in Oregon, and Kokkola, Finland-based Hycamite TCD Technologies, signed a letter of intent to explore the production and distribution of clean hydrogen production using Hycamite’s novel methane pyrolysis technology.

Hycamite’s technology helps to decarbonize industrial.

It does this by delivering low-carbon hydrogen (also known as turquoise hydrogen) and sustainable carbon products for demanding industrial applications.

Hycamite’s technology is a ground-breaking carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology. It captures the carbon in a solid form and delivers it to customers as nanocarbon and other industrial-quality products. Due to the fact that the carbon byproducts are based on electrically conductive carbon nanoproducts, this makes them ideal for applications like supercapacitors, battery production, electronics, concrete manufacturing and additives in polymers and composite materials.

The company’s methane pyrolysis technology decomposes large volumes of methane into hydrogen and carbon without releasing greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. The novel methane-splitting process is sustainable and needs only 13% of the energy that is required to generate hydrogen via electrolysis. The clean hydrogen that is produced from the process can be utilized as an industrial raw material or as fuel.

The technology allows for clean hydrogen production to scale up quickly by using a methane feedstock from biomethane, geological natural gas or synthetic natural gas (Syngas).

Hycamite’s clean hydrogen can be used by customers in NW Natural’s service territory.

“We want to help a variety of industrial customers to decarbonize their production cost-efficiently, and we are ready to scale up the production in North America swiftly,” said Laura Rahikka, Hycamite’s CEO.

Large natural gas customers in NW Natural’s service territory could develop facilities that use Hycamite’s technology to deliver low-carbon hydrogen to supplement or even replace natural gas usage.

For customers that use the clean hydrogen technology, Hycamite would be responsible for installing, commissioning, operating and maintaining the methane pyrolysis units while NW Natural would provide the natural gas feedstock that is needed to produce hydrogen.

“We look forward to working with NW Natural to develop opportunities with the utility and its largest natural gas customers,” said Rahikka.

Low-carbon fuels play a key role in NW Natural’s long-term decarbonization plans.

hydrogen news ebookChris Kroeker, NW Natural‘s business development lead for hydrogen and carbon capture, said that the company is excited by the prospect to reduce emission with clean energy.’

“We look forward to exploring opportunities for Hycamite’s technology to help deliver carbon reductions for us and our customers,” Kroeker added.
