Volvo Introduces New North American Truck as Versatile Hydrogen and Battery Platform

Volvo Trucks North America has announced the launch of the new Volvo VNL, a groundbreaking heavy-duty truck platform that sets new industry benchmarks in terms of driver productivity, safety, and sustainability. This innovative truck, designed for the North American market, is engineered to offer fuel efficiency improvements of up to 10%. The vehicle’s sales are set to commence shortly, with production taking place at the Volvo Trucks New River Valley Plant in Dublin, Virginia.

Peter Voorhoeve, President of Volvo Trucks North America, shared his enthusiasm about the launch: “The all-new Volvo VNL is a quantum leap forward. This introduction signifies a new era for us, our customers, and their drivers. We’ve taken a holistic approach to analyze industry trends and future transportation needs, ensuring this vehicle leads the way in sustainability and transportation demands.”

The Volvo VNL is poised to serve as a versatile platform for various future transportation technologies, including battery-electric, fuel cell, and internal combustion engines powered by renewable fuels such as hydrogen. It is equipped with the industry’s first 24-volt electrical infrastructure in North America and incorporates active safety features that set the standard for future autonomous commercial trucks.

The Volvo VNL’s design focuses on fuel efficiency, safety, driver productivity, connected services, and uptime, transforming commercial freight transport. The truck’s aerodynamic design, featuring a wedge-shaped cab and a redesigned windshield, contributes to a significant fuel efficiency improvement. Powered by the latest generation D13 engine, the VNL offers a range of horsepower and torque options, all optimized for fuel efficiency and performance.

These include Volvo Active Driver Assist Plus with Pilot Assist for lane centering and a range of other active safety features powered by Volvo Dynamic Steering. Additionally, the VNL offers enhanced passive safety systems, such as a panoramic windshield and side-curtain airbags, a first in the North American industry.

Driver-centric design elements in the VNL focus on comfort, efficiency, and safety. Features like the GRAS air suspension system, Volvo Parking Cooler, and various cabin amenities create a comfortable and efficient environment for drivers. The integrated Volvo Connect platform and the MyTruck app further enhance connectivity and ease of use.

Volvo Trucks is also proactive in maximizing uptime and efficiency with services like the Blue Service Contract and a new 24-volt electrical architecture that improves serviceability. With four trim levels and six cab configurations, the VNL offers a wide range of options to meet diverse operational needs.
