Designwerk develops HIGH CAB Semi Lowliner battery cells

Designwerk Technologies, an engineering company in Switzerland, is developing a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cell to power the electric HIGH CAB Semi Lowliner 4x2T by 2024.

Designwerk claims that LFP batteries offer a high number of charge cycles, extended service life and minimal height. The company’s LFP high-voltage battery systems feature 141 Wh/kg specific energy, 170 kWh energy capacity, and modest build space. The cells have shown greater cycle stability than nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) cells.

However, for use cases in which high energy density, high range and low weight are necessary, Designwerk continues to use batteries based on its existing NMC cell technology. The latest generation has a capacity of up to 250 kWh and specific energy of 181 Wh/kg. Capacities of up to 1,000 kWh are possible in a single unit or connected together in battery sets with several megawatt-hours, the company said.

“With LFP cells, we expect the end of life to be reached after at least 3,000 cycles; with NMC cells, it is reached after approximately 2,000 cycles. So with LFP, the maximum mileage for the vehicle is significantly higher,” said Thomas Prohaska, Product Manager Battery Systems at Designwerk.
