Eaton Advances Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology in Commercial Trucks with Czech Republic Grants

SOUTHFIELD, MICH.–Eaton, a leader in intelligent power management, is bolstering its development efforts in Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) with two grants from the Czech Republic. These grants enable Eaton to participate in pioneering mobility projects focused on hydrogen fuel cell technology for commercial trucks. Among the projects is the development of a power distribution unit (PDU) and a DC/DC converter (200 kW) specifically designed for hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles.

“We are continuously expanding our electrified vehicle capabilities in EMEA and forming meaningful partnerships with governments and automotive manufacturers and suppliers,” remarked Dr. Mihai Dorobantu, director, Technology Planning and Government Affairs, Eaton’s Mobility Group. “EMEA is an important growth region for electrified vehicles, and we are proud to help pave the way to an emissions-free future.”

The collaboration with Tatra Trucks for the Battery Electric Tatra Truck with multi-speed Transmission (BETTT) project exemplifies Eaton’s commitment to integrating its advanced power distribution unit and 4-speed transmission into electrified commercial vehicles. “Eaton strives to be at the forefront of innovation for all types of vehicles as the mobility industry continues its transition from internal combustion-powered vehicles to those with electrified drivetrains,” Dorobantu added.

Eaton’s PDU and DC/DC converter project, funded by the Czech government’s DEFACTo program, aims to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen fuel cell technology in heavy-duty trucks. This initiative underscores Eaton’s dedication to exploring and enhancing hydrogen as a clean energy source for commercial transportation. “To successfully complete this project, we are establishing a hydrogen fuel cell lab at our European Innovation Center in Prague to test out different fuel cell components, including air and hydrogen control systems, as well as working to integrate a fuel cell in a simulated vehicle or building,” explained Dorobantu.

Through these projects, Eaton is not only advancing hydrogen fuel cell technology in commercial trucks but also contributing significantly to the global effort to achieve an emissions-free future in transportation.

Eaton was founded in 1911 and has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange for more than a century. We reported revenues of $23.2 billion in 2023 and serve customers in more than 160 countries. For more information, visit www.eaton.com
