Environmental charity Hubbub, Glasgow-based Advanced Clothing Solutions (ACS) and environmental consultant Ecosurety have joined forces to launch Slow Threads: The Sustainable Fashion Fair during Scotland’s Climate Week.

Aiming to tackle both climate change and cost of living crisis, the free two-day interactive event at The Briggait, Glasgow, on Friday, 30 September and Saturday, 1 October 2022, will showcase the best ways to look after the environment and your wardrobe on a budget.

Hubbub polling has previously shown that 80% of 16–24-year-olds have lost track of the items in their wardrobe. Slow Threads invites the public to slow down and take stock of what they own through sustainable fashion talks, displays and workshops.

To showcase the wide variety of affordable sustainable fashion options, visitors will have a chance to swap, rent, and buy second-hand and sustainable clothing.

Visitors will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn how to sew with Sew Confident
  • Swap a preloved outfit in collaboration with Loanhood
  • Meet the campaigners, academics and community groups exploring circular solutions to fashion’s problems
  • Discover local designers, second-hand gems, and sustainable stores

Slow Threads will feature appearances from Fashion Revolution, LoanHood, Glasgow Caledonian University, Cancer Research U.K., and Community Couture.

Lyndsey Pell, Head of Marketing from ACS, said: “The rise of the sustainable wardrobe is growing with cultural attitudes shifting towards preloved and pre-owned fashion. Consumers are more conscious now than ever of the carbon footprint of their clothing and are also more motivated to rent clothing or accessories rather than buy them for special events. At ACS, we are proud to support opportunities encouraging people to consider the environmental implications of their fashion choices. We look forward to working with Hubbub to deliver this dynamic event.”

Sarah Divall from the environmental charity Hubbub said: “Right now we’re dealing with a climate crisis and a cost-of-living crisis simultaneously. Changing our habits around what we buy and exploring more sustainable options for sprucing up our wardrobes like renting, second-hand or swapping is one of the best things we can do for the planet, and it helps reduce household budgets. We’re proud to be bringing so many collaborators together or this event and hopefully giving the people of Glasgow a sustainable bargain in the process.”

Stephanie Housty from Ecosurety said: “We are thrilled to launch Slow Threads and encourage more citizens of Glasgow to be savvy with their textile consumption. It is good for the wallet and the planet.”

Councillor Angus Millar, the Glasgow City Council’s climate convenor said:

“Taking part in the Slow Threads campaign is helping Glasgow to promote the idea of choosing to reuse; extending the useful life of unworn and unloved items of clothing and helping us to live more sustainably.

“Glasgow is aiming to be a circular city by 2045 – and that means people sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, repurposing and recycling existing materials and products like clothing, keeping them in circulation for as long as possible. We need to move away from a ‘make, take, dispose’ model in order to address the climate crisis and this campaign is a great way to help us do that.”

ACS is one of the U.K.’s leading circular and sustainable fashion fulfilment facilities enabling fashion brands and retailers to join the circular economy. Hubbub is an award-winning environmental organisation that runs creative campaigns to encourage positive everyday actions for the environment.
