Electrify America’s Boost Plan to more than double the size of its charging network by 2025

Electrify America was established in 2016 with a budget of $2 billion to invest in EV infrastructure over 10 years. As of May, it had 600 public charging stations with 2,600 individual fast chargers in operation across the US, and it plans to have about 800 stations and 3,500 chargers up and running by the end of 2021.

Now the company, along with its sibling Electrify Canada, has announced a new Boost Plan to enlarge its empire to more than 1,800 fast charging stations and 10,000 individual chargers in the US and Canada by the end of 2025. The expansion will increase the deployment of 150- and 350-kilowatt chargers—the fastest available today.

As part of the expansion, Electrify America will not only expand its presence in established EV regions such as the West Coast and the Northeast, but also add service in the states of Hawaii, North Dakota, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wyoming and Vermont, bringing Electrify America’s network to 49 states and DC.

Electrify Canada will increase its current coverage of 32 stations to more than 100 charging locations and 500 chargers, expanding its network to 9 provinces and enabling EV drivers to travel from Halifax, Nova Scotia along an Electrify Canada route to Victoria, British Columbia.

Electrify America is using customer insights and data (perhaps including Charged’s 2020 Best-in-Test survey) to locate new stations at the most appropriate sites, and to add new features. EA will continue to install stations at convenient metro and highway locations with nearby amenities. The company will install canopies at select stations to shelter customers from the elements and provide enhanced lighting; implement new payment solutions such as Plug & Charge to make charging more convenient; and add integrated battery storage solutions at some locations, allowing deployment of charging stations at sites that would not previously have been feasible. Electrify America’s mobile app has been fully redesigned to incorporate both public and home charging.

“We have decided to double our current charging infrastructure in North America over the next four years to help meet the need for the rapid growth expected of electric vehicles by virtually all the auto manufacturers, and to help make EV adoption more accessible and attractive than ever,” said CEO Giovanni Palazzo. “We are making this commitment to support the plans by major automakers and the US and Canadian governments to help the transformation to an electric mobility transportation system.”
