Cranfield University has scooped two awards for its hydrogen research at the 2024 Hydrogen Awards, held at Keele University on 27 February.

The event, now in its second year, celebrates advancements and excellence in hydrogen research and innovation across academia.

Streamlining hydrogen production

In the UK Universities Award for Excellence in Hydrogen Research and Innovation Dr Jerry Luo, Senior Lecturer in Energy Storage and Harvesting at Cranfield University, and his colleagues clinched the Gold Award for their work on the Direct Coupling Control System for Green Hydrogen Production (DCH2). This innovative technology is a method to efficiently produce hydrogen, a clean energy source, by streamlining the production process, making it more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Dr Luo said: “It’s great recognition to have received this award alongside my colleagues. It underscores our commitment to driving innovation and excellence in hydrogen research, and we are excited about the potential impact of our technology on addressing global energy challenges.”

Clean hydrogen from seawater

A second Gold Award for Cranfield University, the HyDEX Universities Award for Excellence in Hydrogen Research and Innovation. was secured by Dr Indrat Aria, Dr Sue Impey and Dr Yading Wang for their research on Sustainable Green Hydrogen production from seawater. The researchers investigated a method to engineer alternative materials with reduced supply risk and environmental impact for producing hydrogen from impure water.

Dr Aria, Senior Lecturer in Functional Nanomaterials, said: “Receiving this award is a testament to our dedication to pioneering sustainable solutions in hydrogen research. Developing sustainable materials to extract hydrogen from impure water underscores the immense potential for clean energy production. This marks a significant stride towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.”

The awards highlight Cranfield’s role in driving innovation and excellence in hydrogen research.
