Romania to deploy 123 Solaris electric buses

Polish bus builder Solaris has further expanded its penetration of Europe’s public transport market with a hefty order for 123 electric buses in Romania. The total value of the contract is estimated at nearly €65 million.

Seven Romanian municipalities have joined in a tender for 131 zero-emission e-buses. Solaris will supply 123 12-meter vehicles to the towns of Iași, Sibiu, Sighetu Marmației, Suceava, Târgu Mureș and Pitești. All the orders are to be completed by the end of 2022.

The Urbino 12 electric buses will be equipped for both pantograph and plug-in recharging. Solaris will also deliver infrastructure for both slow and fast charging to every location—a total of 123 40 kW plug-in chargers and 36 300 kW pantograph chargers.

Over the last few years, Solaris has delivered 130 articulated Solaris Urbino 18 electric buses in Warsaw, 90 Urbino 12 e-buses in Berlin, and 40 Urbino 12s in Milan. Solaris is already well-known in Romania—since 2002, the bus-maker has supplied Romanian carriers with over 300 vehicles, including over 100 zero-emission trolleybuses and over 40 Urbino 12 electric buses.

“Seeing more and more municipalities take such far-sighted and eco-friendly decisions to extend their fleets via the addition of modern, zero-emission buses is great news not only for us, but also for future generations,” said Solaris Board Member Petros Spinaris.
