5G & The Future of Transport

In a recent sponsored episode of CleanTech Talk, I spoke with Alf Poor, CEO of Ideanomics, about the role of 5G in the transformation of the transportation sector.

Alf and I spoke a bit about the unstoppable electrification of the market, work Ideanomics is doing with utilities to maximize EV potential, the importance of 5G for fully self-driving vehicles.

Alf mentioned that 5G towers have to be fairly close together, which raises costs and slows deployment, meaning that there’s a rather limited geographic scope for 5G penetration in the coming decade. So, any vehicles using an “Internet of Vehicles” system either can’t fully rely on 5G or will have to be limited in their geographic scope.

“We’re going to have to find the right technological blend to keep 4G and 3G able to work with Internet of Vehicles, to make it an end-to-end experience. You think about a delivery truck going state to state — it’s going to pass through some significant rural areas. You can’t just have it go dark if you’re working with Internet of Vehicles and you have fleet operations management relying on it.”

Alf says his Ideanomics team currently sees 5G being utilized the most in the transportation sector for traffic and route optimization, to cut down on commercial operation time, and thus costs. Naturally, we have traffic and route optimization on 3G and 4G networks, but 5G enables improved systems.

He also highlighted the potential for more advanced vehicle performance analysis and energy performance analysis to save large amounts of money in the long run by improving efficiency and operations at a more and more sophisticated level.

We also talked a bit more about a few different semi-autonomous vehicle experiences, autonomous vehicle efficiency, and autonomous vehicles more broadly. To close up, we discussed some innovations in EV charging, particularly on-street EV charging.
