Review of “A Bright Future”
What if I told you that solving the global climate emergency is not only within our grasp, but already partially done? What if you learned that some countries have already made this change, and haven’t had to go back to living in yurts in order to do so? “A Bright Future” by Joshua S. Goldstein and Staffan A. Qvist explains how this is possible.
He tells us about a wondrous, clean burning fuel source that produces almost no carbon. It has an impeccable safety record, creates cheap electricity, and could decarbonize the world quickly and efficiently. Why don’t we use it? Because the electricity source is nuclear power.
We don’t want nuclear power of course, for a lot of reasons:
- Fear of melt downs
- Radioactive waste
- Cancer
- Mass deaths
You get the idea. The authors of this book also understand why we fear nuclear power, and the rest of the book is dedicated to heavily and reliably sourced information on why we shouldn’t fear nuclear power.
To boil it down into a few sentences, all together in over 50 years of running nuclear power plants, there can be at most 4,000 deaths nominally attributed to nuclear energy. If you compare it to coal, over 100,000 deaths can without any doubt be attributed to burning coal, and that’s not counting global warming.
I highly recommend that you read A Bright Future. I would even go so far as to say this book is worth the carbon emissions it would take to ship it to you, if that knowledge is then spread to the people who need to read it.
