EV Industry Leaders Discuss Form & Function of the Innovative Charging Protocol ISO/IEC 15118
Last week, EV industry leaders CharIN, Hager, Hubject*, and IoTecha hosted a webinar entitled “A 360° View Webinar: From Plug&Charge to Smart Charging Using CCS ISO/IEC 15118.”
During the webinar, which had approximately 600 people registered from around the world, moderators Barton Sidles of Hubject Inc. and Oleg Logvinov of IoTecha guided this in-depth conversation about ISO/IEC 15118, focusing on the work that has gone into the development of this innovative charging protocol, as well as the benefits that will be realized by EV drivers and the EV industry as a whole with wide implementation of the Combined Charging System (CCS) connector using ISO/IEC 15118 communication protocol.
The webinar also featured a video showing a real-time Plug&Charge event from earlier in the day, showing a Hager charging station and a Porsche Taycan using IoTecha components and cloud connectivity to the Hubject’s ISO 15118 Plug&Charge ecosystem. You can watch the full webinar below:
The experienced and knowledgeable panelists represented seven stakeholders from throughout the electric vehicle ecosystem:
- Eric Bach, VP of Engineering from Lucid Motors
- Christian Girardeau, Electrification Director from BP
- Christian Hahn, CEO from Hubject
- Andreas Heinrich, Engineer from Daimler
- Rustam Kocher, Charging Infrastructure Lead from Daimler Trucks North America
- Jean Lasserre, Corporate Strategy Vice President from Hagar
- Marc Mueltin, Founder from V2G Clarity
The panelists represented diverse perspectives, and gave us a clear picture of the needs of both EV drivers and the business side of charging. EV drivers’ key needs include simple, seamless, and interoperable charging, while businesses prioritize reliable and robust charging that is secure, scalable, and manageable. Overall, all panelists agreed that the collaborative work on ISO/IEC 15118 over the past 10 years has led to a strong and all-encompassing protocol. The current protocol addresses key use cases and will further enable wider EV adoption in the present and future.
One of the primary benefits of utilizing the robust and open standard of CCS and ISO/IEC 15118 is economies of scale for all stakeholders. If more parties are involved in product and ecosystem development, implementation will happen more quickly, which benefits us all. An especially exciting use case discussed during the webinar is bi-directional energy flow using CCS and ISO/IEC 15118.
Bi-directional functionality adds a whole new way to think about electric vehicle ownership for individuals and especially fleet operators. Using bi-directional power from the vehicle would enable an individual to power a home for a couple of days, but a Class A truck or fleet could make a huge difference during emergencies or large power outages powering relief centers and hospitals. This is helpful in many situations, and impacts the total cost of ownership calculation of the vehicle(s).
In their summary remarks, the panelists emphasized the importance of using CCS and ISO/IEC 15118 in the EV market, and why it should be embraced as a key market enabler. The Porsche Taycan and Hager Plug&Charge demonstration shows the reality and simplicity of the protocol development.
Collaboration is imperative to continue ISO/IEC 15118 development and expansion. Everyone can participate by joining CharIN and attending the Testivals (Testing Symposiums) where EVSE and EVs are able to test in one central gathering location.
