Volkswagen begins selling ID. Charger in Europe

Volkswagen has started deliveries of its ID. Charger, a wall-mounted Level 2 home charger, in eight European countries. The ID. Charger can be used to charge any EV with a Type 2 connector.  It can be ordered online or from Volkswagen dealers, at an introductory price of €399. VW is teaming up with certified electrical contractors to offer a comprehensive installation service.

“In the past, buying a wallbox was often a tiresome exercise for customers,” said Peter Diekmann, Key Account Manager at Volkswagen charging subsidiary Elli. “We want to change that, and are offering a single-source solution for the ID. Charger, from purchase and installation through to commissioning.”

The ID. Charger will be gradually introduced in three versions, all with a charging capacity of up to 11 kW. The ID. Charger Connect and ID. Charger Pro versions will be connected chargers that allow customers to control charging processes and manage credit card access via a smartphone app. The ID. Charger Pro also offers an integrated electricity meter that can be used, for example, to bill electricity costs for company car drivers.

“We will be building a complete charging network around the ID.3 over the coming months,” said Board Member Thomas Ulbrich. “The ID. Charger gets things rolling, and further charging services will follow. In future, charging an electric car is to be as clear and simple as charging a smartphone.”

In Germany, Volkswagen EV owners have access to Naturstrom, a program that delivers electricity from certified renewable sources.

A new law that will secure the right of apartment owners and tenants to install chargers at their parking spaces is making its way through the German legislature. “The right to install a private wallbox is important for the success of e-mobility,” said Thomas Ulbrich. “Both home owners and tenants in Germany can at last plan reliably. Moreover, this legislation also places an obligation on other European countries where similar regulations are needed for additional planning security.”
