Lyten introduces lithium-sulfur battery platform

Material supplier Lyten has introduced its new LytCell lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery platform. The new platform was developed specifically for the EV market, and is designed to deliver three times the specific energy of lithium-ion batteries. Lyten has previously worked with the US government to test LytCell in defense-related applications, and is now ready to introduce its battery technology platform to the EV market.

The Lyten 3D Graphene-based Li-S architecture has the potential to reach a specific energy of 900 Wh/kg.  Lyten says its Sulfur Caging technology improves performance by arresting the polysulfide shuttle, a factor that compromises cycle life.  Under DOD test protocols, a LytCell prototype design has demonstrated more than 1,400 cycles. The company claims that its Lyten 3D Graphene platform enables the advanced lithium-sulfur battery chemistry to realize higher energy density, better temperature performance, faster charging, and improved safety.

The company also says its batteries will be safer than conventional batteries because Li-S does not contain oxygen from metallic oxides. Lyten reports that its batteries can run from -30 to +60 degrees Celsius, can be produced in cylindrical, pouch, or prismatic formats, and use no conflict minerals.

“We’re confident that Lyten’s battery platform will accelerate the mass consumer adoption of EV ownership due to the performance, range, and safety improvements of our batteries,” said Dan Cook, CEO of Lyten. “By also delivering the most environmentally responsible battery with a USMCA-compliant supply chain, we believe Lyten will enable automakers to more confidently execute their announced electrification roadmaps.”
