Renault unveils Mégane eVision e-hatchback and budget-priced Dacia Spring Electric

At a recent press event (virtual of course), Renault unveiled a sleek new electric hatchback and an inexpensive new EV under the Dacia brand.

The Renault Mégane eVision, built on the new modular CMF-EV platform, will serve as the basis of a production EV to be launched next year. Its front-wheel drive powertrain features a 160 kW (217 hp) electric motor, served by a 60 kWh battery pack. The on-board charger can handle Level 2 at a healthy 22 kW, and DC fast charging at 130 kW.

The Dacia Spring Electric has far more modest insides: a 33 kW electric motor and a 26.8 kWh battery pack. Thanks to its small form factor and low weight, Renault says that it should reach a respectable 225 km (140 miles) of WLTP range. Level 2 charging happens at up to 6.6 kW, and optional DC charging at up to 30 kW.

In addition to the base version, there will be “a version adapted to car sharing,” featuring geolocation and remote door opening via smartphone; as well as “a cargo utility vehicle” designed for tradespeople, with a cargo volume of 800 liters and a payload of 325 kilos.

Renault says this “versatile and practical city car” will be “the lowest-priced electric city car on the market in Europe.” It will go on sale in spring 2021 in Europe, at an expected price of around 10,000 euros ($12,000)
