CASE’s electric backhoe loaders could save New York utilities 90% in maintenance costs

CASE Construction Equipment has delivered two CASE 580 EV backhoes to New York State Gas & Electric (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E), both subsidiaries of Avangrid.

CASE began the development of its electric backhoe in March of 2020, and has been working with each utility to refine the machines ahead of delivery and deployment. CASE electrified the 580 EV in conjunction with Green Machine Equipment and Moog. Monroe Tractor will work with the utilities and integration partners to support the equipment in the field.

The 580 EV is powered by Green Machine’s proprietary 480-volt, 90 kWh lithium-ion WhisperDrive battery pack, which can be charged by any 220-volt connection. Depending on the application, the machine can typically work a full eight-hour day on a single charge. The battery separately powers the drivetrain and hydraulic motors, delivering hydraulic breakout forces equal to those of diesel-powered machines, as well as improved performance during simultaneous loader and drivetrain operation.

CASE estimates that the 580 EV could save fleets as much as 90 percent in annual vehicle service and maintenance costs.

“As an energy provider, we have a responsibility to be good stewards of the environment and build a more sustainable future for our communities,” says Carl Taylor, President and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E. “The addition of this first-of-its-kind backhoe into our fleet will help us meet sustainability goals and benefit the communities we serve by providing a cleaner work environment in the form of emissions and noise reduction.”
