An innovative, industry-leading digital approach to explosion risk assessment has seen a win for Yorkshire Water, which was named as Digital Initiative of the Year at the British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA).

Judges commended the development and implementation of a digital model, in collaboration with Stantec, fed with geographic and risk data for Yorkshire Water’s catchment assets in compliance with the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR).

Peter Coker, principal engineer at Yorkshire Water, said: “Previously, a DSEAR catchment risk study was labour intensive and a region the size of Yorkshire could take decades to fully assess.

“The new approach has allowed us to deliver more than 7,000 catchment assessments across 22,400 miles of sewer, in just 18 months. It is more thorough, and the process allows us to put more focus on assets with the highest risk.

“The BCIA award is recognition of the hard work of a team of people at Yorkshire Water and our partners Stantec who have delivered an innovative and industry-leading tool.”
