The Halifax Regional Municipality up in Canada is getting more serious about climate action and stopping air pollution in its borders. The municipality has plans to put $780 million into getting the 210 electric buses onto the road and 3 new ferry routes into service by 2028, according to TheChronicleHerald (h/t Collie Guy).

Some of the buses will also be part of a new “bus rapid transit” (BRT) focus implemented on 4 bus lines that will make transit use quicker, more convenient, and more respected.

“They will run primarily on transit priority lanes that allow buses to avoid traffic congestion. [Dave Reage, director of Halifax Transit] said 60 per cent of the 50-kilometre network will feature priority lanes.”

210 buses comes to about half of the Halifax Regional Municipality’s bus fleet of around 400. The longer-term plan is full electrification of the fleet. TheChronicleHerald provides some more details on the financial side of the story:

“An electric bus would provide $24,000 a year in savings in energy and maintenance costs, Reage said. The maintenance cost savings could surpass $6-million annually for 210 battery-electric buses by 2028.

“Reage said the capital cost to provide electric buses for the first two phases of the project will be an estimated $400 million to $460 million but the capital costs of staying with diesel buses over the same time period would be about $153 million.

“‘The incremental cost to electrify the fleet is between $247 million and $307 million,’ Reage said.

“Reage said the green infrastructure and public transit infrastructure fund, bilateral agreements established between the federal and provincial governments, should provide enough money to pay for the bulk of the rapid transit and electric bus projects.

“The municipality would be on the hook for 27 per cent of the projects, $180 million to $210 million over the next eight years.”
