The Tata Nexon EV is a smash hit in India’s slow but growing EV market. That’s what you get when you create a great product. The Nexon EV is a vehicle that was well thought out. It is a practical EV that took into consideration the key attributes that address consumers’ needs in its target market.

Tata managed to successfully balance the key parameters that determine a vehicle’s performance, range, and most importantly its price. The Nexon EV comes with a decent 30.2 kWh battery pack and a 96 kW motor giving 245 Nm of torque. Tata warranties for both the battery and electric motor are up to 8 years or 160,000 kilometers, whichever comes first. This impressive warranty will give consumers some peace of mind and help address misconceptions that EV batteries don’t last long. The Tata Nexon also comes with ZConnect, which allows you to stay connected.

The Indian-made Tata Nexon EV is a sleek, trendy looking all-electric compact SUV. Manufactured in Pune, it brings a breath of fresh air to the EV industry, especially for right-hand drive markets like here in East and Southern Africa where we hope to see the Tata Nexon EV soon.

The Nexon EV has a stylish and beautiful interior. The Nexon EV starts at around $18,000 for the entry level model, which means it’s a good quality EV that is affordable for a lot of people around the world. The Nexon has been outselling both the Hyundai Kona and the MG ZS EV in India. Tata Motors has now also launched a subscription package starting at around $560 per month for the Nexon EV. Customers can choose from a number of contract options from a minimum of 18 months and up to 36 months. There is an option to own the car by paying a settlement fee for the car after the contract period.

The world has been waiting for a realistic EV with decent real-world electric range. The Nexon EV can do realistic ranges of over 200 km in city driving cycles. The more than 200 kilometers of city range is awesome, and let’s face it, most people’s daily round trip commutes are less than 40 km. The Nexon’s range is also perfect for some of the popular commutes to satellite towns, such as the 70 km Harare-Marondera (Zimbabwe) route, the 66 km Pretoria-Johannesburg (South Africa) route, the 90 km Nairobi-Naivasha route, and the 45 km Nairobi-Thika (Kenya) route. Tata has significant presence on the African continent with dealerships across many African nations. This means it could be a gamechanger in terms of availability.

A lot of other manufacturers of New Energy Vehicles do not have presence in many African states, which could be a barrier to widespread adoption of those EVs on the continent. The Nexon is a real EV for real people, not some futuristic vaporware that some OEMs promise in perpetuity. We certainly hope Tata can scale up production of the Nexon really fast, as it will be well received in a lot of markets. In the short space of time that it has been available in India, it has already broken records in India’s slow but growing EV sales market.
