BYD Bringing Electric Tang & Yuan To Colombia!
BYD is almost always one of the first automakers to bring electric vehicles to a country in South America. Colombia is the latest winning nation to benefit from BYD’s cleantech innovation, and in this case it’s getting the well loved Tang EV and Yuan EV. The Yuan EV is currently the 10th best selling electric automobile in China.
Motores y Marquinas (Motorysa) is now an official distributor of the Tang EV in the country. To kick off, it is receiving delivery of 132 electric cars later this year, which will be sold in Bogotá, Medellin, Cali, and other cities.
Not being that familiar with the Colombian market, Motorysa didn’t ring any bells for me, but it is apparently a big deal down south, especially under the umbrella of corporate giant Seissa Group. Motorysa has reportedly been selling cars in Colombia for more than 50 years.
“BYD is a world-leading new energy vehicle manufacturer and has strong sales performance. Its products and technologies are safe and reliable,” said Marco Pastrana, General Manager of Motorysa. “We are very honored to be its distributor and will work together to push the boundaries of EV development in Colombia.”
Colombia doesn’t have a hot electric vehicle market, but it should soon. In 2019, the country passed a law requiring that cities shift their public transportation systems to 30% electric by 2025. There are currently some tax incentives for buying electric cars, but there’s also a strong chance the government gets stronger on electric car requirements or incentives.
Last November, the capital city of Bogotá ordered 379 electric buses from BYD. That was the largest electric bus order in the history of South America.
“BYD’s zero-emission transportation solutions are rapidly gaining ground in Latin America, and now successfully serve markets in many other countries across the region, including Ecuador, Chile, Brazil, Peru, Panama, Uruguay and Argentina,” BYD adds.
