Tesla is piloting a new method of delivering new cars to customers. It puts the new owners in a group for the training part of the delivery process. A new owner from Edinburgh documented the group handover process as it went down during the delivery of his new Tesla.

After a quick check-in and confirmation that everyone already had the Tesla app installed on their phones, the 4 parties in his group were ushered over to the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range+ in the showroom. A Tesla representative walked them through the features and basic operation of the car.

The four new vehicles were then pulled around front and revealed to the new owners in spectacular fashion. Rollup doors were pulled up and the cars were revealed to the new, smiling owners. From the sound of it, the kit that comes with the cars in the UK are a bit different than what we get here in the US. They come equipped with a first aid kit, charging cable, yellow vest, and the usual version 2 Tesla Mobile Connector.

The new owners set up the cars on their phones as the excitement continued to build. Key cards were inside each vehicle, where the owners were able to sync them up to their new phone keys and cars. After taking delivery, owners mingled around the service center, surely balancing the desire to ask more questions of the staff and the pressing need to get out onto the asphalt to play in their new Model 3s.

All in all, it sounds like the group delivery process retains the majority of the excitement and personalization associated with taking ownership of a new Tesla. You also then have a special little family of Tesla owners from your cohort. On the other hand, even though the same information might be conveyed, and at the end of the day, a car is transferred, it’s clear that the personal service that comes with a 1 on 1 handover is missing.
