Ricoh Eco Action Day 2020 Panel: The race to net zero

Net-zero and carbon-negative are two buzzwords in corporate sustainability this year, with various industry giants announcing such ambitious decarbonisation targets.

Today, more than 200 firms have joined RE100, a global club of companies committed to powering their entire operations with renewables, underscoring the momentum that corporate climate initiatives have gained worldwide.

As consumer awareness on the climate crisis grows and governments adopt more stringent emissions regulations, decarbonisation is also fast becoming a prerequisite for business success.

Like other nations, Singapore has recently stepped up climate action and declared plans phase out fossil fuel vehicles within two decades.

Companies will need to play their part to help the city-state, and other countries they operate in, to shrink climate impacts, or confront the fallout from inaction. Reputational damage, financial vulnerability and a lack of access to capital are the likely impacts for firms that fail to respond to the climate crisis this decade, new research shows.

However, companies seeking to cut emissions from their operations face persistent obstacles. Policies, best practices and tools that could help corporates along this bumpy journey are available, but this needs to be shared widely and ramped up among stakeholders.

On 2 June, industry players, government representatives, energy providers and sustainability experts will come together at Ricoh Eco-Action Day Panel Discussion, hosted online, to talk about opportunities and challenges in corporate decarbonisation.

What are viable business models to make the switch to renewables? How can firms ramp up energy efficiency and electrify their transport fleets? Is carbon offsetting a cop-out?

Participants will discuss issues such as the cost of renewables, space constraints, roadblocks to onsite power generation, and ways to communicate the need for corporate decarbonisation.

They will explore the current regulatory barriers to greater adoption of green technologies, and the policies that would accelerate their deployment and help the world achieve its goals under the Paris Agreement.
