Richard Horne, the vice president of packaging and circular economy for petrochemicals firm Borouge, has moved to Polymateria, a chemicals firm that makes biodegradable and compostable plastics.

He joins the five year-old London-headquartered firm as chief commercial officer, based in Singapore.

Polymateria, which was founded in 2016, produces non-toxic plastics that break down without resulting in microplastics. It has developed innovations such as a polyethylene film that is both recyclable and biodegradable.

Horne comes on board after more than three years with Borouge, where he was responsible both for the company’s packaging business and circular economy strategy, working on recycling, waste collection, waste to energy, advocacy and education.

He was a founding member for the newly launched Plastics Recycling Association Singapore (PRAS), an association set up to improve Singapore’s low recycling rate, and chairman of the industry sustainability committee for the Singapore Chemical Industry Council.

He was also a board member for the Singapore Packaging Agreement, which mandates companies in Singapore measure and reduce their packaging footprints.

Over his career, Horne has worked for packaging giant Amcor, software firm Excelsior Technologies, and food packaging company Fispak.
