ImpactAlpha, November 20 – U.K.-based Stone Family Foundation is providing an undisclosed amount of upfront capital for Cambodia’s first development impact bond, which aims to improve sanitation for the poorest and most marginalized Cambodian households.
The four year project aims to cut open defecation to 0% in 1,600 rural villages by boosting access to in-home latrines to 85% and reducing use of shared-latrines to 15%.
iDE, a nonprofit organization that tests market-based solutions to poverty, is the project’s implementation partner. The Stone Family Foundation’s investment will be used to expand iDE’s existing sanitation access work in Cambodia.
The project fits right in the Stone Family Foundation’s wheelhouse: most of its philanthropic dollars go to market-based clean water and sanitation solutions in emerging markets. If successful, the Stone Family Foundation will be repaid, with a small return, by USAID.
