Volta Trucks, a Scandinavian startup, has teased a zero-emission, fully electric delivery vehicle with typically slick and stylish Scandinavian design, named the Volta Zero. The vehicle will be launched this fall.

We don’t currently have many specs on the vehicle. More will be revealed on voltatrucks.com in coming months. What we see for now are a few graphics of the concept EV and the following basics:

  • 150–200 km (95 – 125 mile) range.
  • 220-degree visibility for driver.
  • “World’s first purpose-built full-electric 16-tonne vehicle designed for inner-city freight deliveries.”

One thing highlighted by Volta Trucks is that the electric powertrain provides an opportunity for greater safety — “the Volta Zero was designed for electric from the outset, which also facilitates a step-change in vehicle and pedestrian safety. Thanks to the removal of the internal combustion engine, the operator of a Volta Zero sits in a central driving position, with a much lower seat height than a conventional truck, thus giving the  driver a wide 220-degrees of visibility, and minimizing dangerous blind spots.” Presumably, that also helps them to avoid running over bicyclists, which I think is a bigger issue with buses (especially in certain locations) than possibly hitting pedestrians.

To help launch the EV startup, and presumably because of a highly attractive product, Bring and Posten, “the Nordic region’s leading distributor of parcels, cargo, and mail,” chose to trial the Volta Zero. Bring and Posten will trial the Volta Zero in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland starting in Q1 2020.

“Members of Volta’s new Pioneer Programme will be the first to operate pilot fleet trucks and production vehicles, as well as receiving exclusive communication opportunities,” the company notes.

Despite the founders being Norwegian and Swedish, the Volta Zero is being produced in the UK. Otherwise, its offices are in Sweden.
